Registration suggestion

Biking groups have shown their disapproval to the idea of all motorbikes carrying number plates.

MPs have suggested this idea to help solve address issues surrounding illegal use of mini and toy bikes.

Members of the RMI Motorcycle Retailers Association, part of the Retail Motor Industry Federation, say the current Vehicle Identification Number should be enough for detection. The VIN is used for both on road and off road mechanically propelled vehicles.

Mike Owen, head of the MRA, said: “This is an over-the-top solution to a problem that police already have powers to deal with.

“Calling for the introduction of compulsory registration – with actual number plates – is an over-reaction to an age-old problem: we believe it is simply not necessary.”

The MRA have said they would continue to work with police to highlight illegal road users but would not welcome the unwelcome attention of officers registration would encourage.
