New ‘motorcycle detection’ system on way

Speed camera bosses have asked private industries to develop a new system for catching motorcycles.

An Official Journal of the European Union notice invites firms to tender for a valuable contract to develop “automatic motorcycle detection equipment”.

It states: “The Contract is for the supply of equipment and services in order to accurately detect motorcycles.”

The notice, issued this month, says the new system must be operational by October.

It says: “The aim is to provide Systems for eight key routes in the county that have been identified as dangerous motorcycle routes.”

Neill Bennett, handling responses to the notice for Derbyshire Road Safety Partnership, said: “It could tell us it’s a motorcycle, the direction, the speed and time of day. That’s fundamental for us.”

To find out how the system could single out bikes for speed enforcement, get MCN, on sale May 21.
