Where to watch at Silverstone

MCN’s Senior Road Tester has just returned from riding the full circuit at Silverstone and came back raving about the freshly revamped Northamptonshire track.

He said: “The best seats in the house for the British MotoGP (on June 20th) will be overlooking Woodcote corner – I reckon the MotoGP boys will be taking it at 170mph, getting sideways if the electronics allow.

“As part of the multi-million pound development, the grandstands along the Pits Straight have been moved back and the run-off greatly increased so the old Mickey Mouse first gear chicane leading on to the straight is gone.

“Now the Pits Straight effectively starts as you exit the long horseshoe Luffield right hander. On my Ducati 848 race bike, with long road gearing, I was accelerating through second, third and fourth gear out of Luffield.

“The approach to Woodcote is blind and you have to apex at precisely the right point, turn too early and you’ll run out of track on the way out. Glancing down at the speedo on the 848 it’s doing a breathtaking 145mph through this fast flick.

“A few days before I took a Ducati 1198S road bike through there at an indicated 140mph, with its traction control going mad trying to calm the wheelspin.

“I’ve never ridden through such a fast corner and still been accelerating and feeding in the gears coming out the other side. It’s electrifying.

“It will be a sight to behold if you’re lucky enough to watch from here. You’ll also be able to see the Luffield section of track, the Pits Straight and watch them disappear round Copse corner.”
