MCN Ride to Work Day winner announced

Congratulations to Mike Hull, who won the MCN Ride to Work Day award and a £500 Hein Gericke voucher, which he has put towards a new Hein Gericke Tricky 4 Gortex jacket.

Mike works as a long haul Purser / Cabin Crew for British Airways at London Heathrow airport, but he lives on the edge of Derby, not too far from Donington Park, making his commute 140 miles door to door.

Mike rides all year round in all weathers and has been enjoying his commute to work by bike for many years.

Mike said: “My route is 80 miles of excellent A roads, with some great bends and straights followed by 60 miles on the not so excellent M40 and M25. I love landing at Heathrow really early on a Saturday or Sunday morning as I will have the roads to myself (well almost).”

“I still use my lovely old 1993 Yamaha YZF 750R but my main bike is a 2002 ZX-12R which is great. The facilities at Terminal 5 are not too bad for bikes, the covered bike parking area having been recently upgraded.

“With the better weather comes more motorcycles and bikes now fill the bike park and stretch along one of the roads outside the arrivals level of T5.”

“British Airways provide me with a decent sized bike locker, which is free and is mine for as long as I use it. Obviously there are shower and ironing facilities should I need them.

“More importantly the managers generally appreciate that I filter and arrive on time when others are stuck in traffic and late for work.”

“Most of my colleagues don’t understand why I would choose to ride to work, or why I enjoy it so much but as my T-shirt says; ‘Those who dance are considered insane by those who cannot hear the music’ (it’s a big T-shirt)”.
