MCN 60 greatest bikes; staff picks

1 of 3

MCN has turned 60 this year and what better way to celebrate this milestone than by naming the top 60 bikes of all time as voted for by you. All this week we will be choosing some of our favourites from the list. For the full 60 greatest bikes and further details, pick up a copy of this week’s MCN, out today.

Here are Managing Editor, Ped Baker’s selection of the bikes you voted for:

“The three bikes I’ve picked aren’t necessarily everyone’s cup of tea but they’re undeniably landmark bikes.”

Triumph X75
The Craig Vetter styled Triumph X75 Hurricane is innovative, outrageous and exactly what the cool kids wanted in 1970. The stuffed suits at Meriden said it was too ‘trendy’ (like that’s a bad thing?) but after the prototype was shown on the cover of Cycle World, people power saved the day and 1200 were produced before the BSA/Triumph group lurched towards bankruptcy.

Harley Davidson FXS1200
The Harley Davidson FXS1200 Low Rider was the first ‘factory’ custom. With mag wheels, drag bars, slash-cut exhausts and white lettered tyres it was an instant sales hit. It changed the direction of Harley and probably saved the company.

Honda CX500
Like a plus size lingerie model, the Honda CX500 is curvy, brassy and has a wide, comfortable seat. Loved by despatch riders the world over for its incredible durability, reliability (after the timing chain was replaced) and huge tank range. Over 100,000 miles on the clock wasn’t unusual, they survived many UK winters unscathed and even crashed well. Nicknamed the plastic maggot it’s odd that they’re now sought after as donor bikes for cafe racers.
