Real enthusiastic about Japanese bikes

1 of 3

Nostalgia for Japanese motorcycles grows year on year and there are very few of us that haven’t in some way been touched by machinery from the land of the rising sun. Each passing decade has spawned a cornucopia of classics, from the humble Honda 50 and revolutionary CB750, through Z1s and RDs to XTs, Africa Twins, GSX-Rs and so on – whatever your age there has been something for everyone and the variety is truly mind blowing.

The Vintage Japanese Motorcycle Club was set up in the early ’80s to cater for anyone with an interest in such bikes and is currently some 5000 members strong. You don’t need to own a classic to join, but with a cut off date of just 15 years there are a good many bikes out there that meet the criteria. Membership costs just £25 per year, which includes a bimonthly magazine, preferential rates with a selection of insurance companies and an open door to over 40 local sections who organise regular meet ups and rideouts.

Look out for VJMC events here.

But there’s more than just a social scene. Whether you’re striving to complete a ‘nut and bolt’ rebuild or simply keeping a daily ride on the road, there are certain parts that can be nigh on impossible to track down; online auction sites can bear fruit, but all too often the price will either skyrocket as bidders get trigger happy or you’ll find that the trim clip you so desperately need is overseas and tagged with a shipping charge that would cover the cost of an entire fairing. Membership of the VJMC can provide access to the secret stashes of real enthusiasts and there’s a good chance you’ll be able to track down exactly what you need for a reasonable price.

And it’s not just spares, as the VJMC is also a comprehensive resource for expert help and advice. With a wealth of experience in fixing and fettling, there are specialists for every marque and in many cases, individual models. The VJMC is a growing community with the simple aim of promoting the enjoyment of Japanese motorcycles, so whatever era floats your boat what reason not to join?
