Guy Martin's 'Big Build' gathers pace

Guy Martin is on a mission to help youngsters follow his path into a career dominated by engineering by instigating a project to create an educational centre near Lincoln. His team met with government officials and local businesses earlier this week to advance the project, dubbed the Big Build. The idea is to create a centre that can deliver courses on engineering, building and mechanics, to give Guy’s home turf an education boost, so that youngsters can follow in his footsteps.

Channel4 announced the project last year, revealing that it would be the bedrock of a new series, and that the idea was to “recruit a group of unemployed Grimsby teenagers, who will be hired and trained in construction and engineering, to deliver a technical and engineering challenge on a site in Lincolnshire. It will feature the upcycling of old military hardware such as tanks, helicopters, planes, troop carriers and boats, and it will be powered by new cutting edge technologies – marrying the machinery of the past with the technologies of the future.”

The aim is that once the site is up and running, it will be a training ground recruiting from the local area and, through maintenance and expansion of the site, give young people the opportunity and skills they need to become trained engineers.

Think of it as DIY SOS meets Educating Yorkshire meets Speed.
