No charge for bikes on new Mersey Gateway Bridge

Motorcycles will be able to cross the new Mersey Gateway toll bridge, which will run between the towns of Runcorn and Widnes near Liverpool, for free when it opens this autumn.

The bridge will feature a six-carriageway road that it is hoped will relieve congestion on the ageing Silver Jubilee Bridge the currently connects the two towns.

There will be no toll booths on the bridge, with a number plate recognition system being used instead to identify the cars, vans and taxis that will be subjected to the £2 fee. Larger vans and mini busses will pay £6 and heavy goods vehicles will be charged £8 for the journey across.

The toll will not apply to local busses and motorcycles though.
