Norfolk Police offer training to bikers

Norfolk Police are offering two new courses to motorcyclists in a bid to curb accidents and injuries on the county’s roads.

The Safer Rider course is run as part of the Road Casualty Reduction Partnership and aims to reduce the number of motorcycle casualties, while the Hugger Challenge is a 90 minute one-on-one bespoke training session.

The Safer Rider courses, which are running until October, are aimed at fully qualified riders who want to improve their skills. The course will provide individuals with professional advice to highlight their strengths and identify their weaknesses as a rider.

The road portion of the course will include a demonstration from a Police rider as well as an assessment with written feedback.

Chief Inspector Kris Barnard, head of the Norfolk and Suffolk Roads Policing Unit, said: “Reducing the number of people who are killed or seriously injured on the county’s roads remains a priority for us and sadly the statistics speak for themselves that each year a high percentage of those killed on our roads are motorcyclists.

“The underlying message of the workshops is that education is key, not enforcement. The workshops give motorcyclists greater awareness of the hazards they may face when out and about to help them become better and safer riders.”

Both Safe Rider and the Hugger courses are administered by Andy Micklethwaite, Motorcycles Road Safety Officer at Norfolk County Council and former Police motorcycle instructor.

Mr Micklethwaite said: “Additional training or assessment is key to improving riders ability and awareness, not only sharpening your skills but better preparing you for unexpected hazards on the road. Riders will also get more from their bike and have more fun in a safe and smooth manner without being boring and without taking any risks.”
