Take a break at the Green Welly Stop

1 of 1

To the north of the Trossachs, at the southern edge of Rannoch Moor, lies the small Scottish village of Tyndrum, a remote hamlet whose location at the junction of the A82 and A85 puts it firmly on the map as the gateway to some of the finest rides on the planet – be it west to Argyll and the Islands or north through Glencoe to the entire Highland coastline, there are spectacular roads in every direction.

At the height of the season, thousands of bikes pass through this point and almost all of them will take a break at Tyndrum’s world-famous landmark, the Green Welly Stop. This once humble filling station has grown into a thriving staging post that’s ready to refresh even the weariest of travellers.

Today it’s still a family-run business, with Les’ granddaughter Fiona Robertson and her husband Edward now at the helm, both are avid motorcyclists and know how important it is to offer facilities that cater for their fellow bikers, not to mention a warm Scottish welcome.

TOP STORIES

Besides fuel, there’s a take-away café, self-service restaurant, gift shop, an outdoor clothing store – handy if you’ve forgotten to pack your thermals – and parking for up to 50 bikes. All food is prepared on the premises, including the best-selling Cullen Skink soup, one of five varieties always available.

Spend any time here at all and you’ll meet a huge variety of riders, from IAM groups on a local rideout to international mile munchers on a grand tour – when it comes to bikers, the Green Welly is a true cosmopolitan cross roads.

And although not a traditional hang out, the place is becoming something of a destination; throughout the summer there will be a series of dealer demo days, with representatives from Ducati, Yamaha, BMW and Suzuki displaying their latest models- there can’t be many surroundings more idyllic in which to take a test ride!

He has built up a wealth of experience in putting the latest machinery through its paces, as well as subjecting every aspect of motorcycle kit to the rigours of real-world riding. A lifelong two-wheel enthusiast with a deep passion for motorcycles, Justin first hit the streets at 16 on a Suzuki TS50X and has since owned more bikes than he cares to remember. A spell as a London courier saw him cut his biking teeth on some of the country’s busiest roads and as an instructor he has striven to give many a novice the grounding to do the same. Justin has ridden on four continents (so far), both as a solo rider and as a tour guide, tackling terrain from the perilous mountain roads of the Himalayas to rugged South African dirt tracks, sweeping North American highways and the glorious passes of the European Alps. He likes nothing more than an early start for a full day in the saddle and takes great pleasure in sniffing out those roads less travelled – to Justin, every bike is an adventure bike. When not testing products, Justin can usually be found in his shed, where he maintains, restores and rebuilds not just bikes, but anything mechanical that comes his way. He currently owns a 2010 Triumph Sprint 1050 ST, 1998 Yamaha TRX 850 and is running a 2024 Harley-Davidson Pan America CVO as a long termer.
