Artisans in the Peaks | Great Northern Classics sets up teaching hub for owners of historic vehicles

A new classic vehicle workspace is opening in Derby, allowing fans of old school two-and four-wheelers to hone their skills on the tools, as well as being a place to store their precious machines.

Great Northern Classics (GNC) can be found just 16 miles from the Peak District National Park and will open its doors to the public on Sunday, March 17 – offering a warm and dry space for enthusiasts to work.

“It’s all happening,” said GNC’s Shaun Matthews. “It’s pretty mind-blowing to think this was still a concept only two years ago and yet now we’re seeing the site fill up and have already hosted a series of invite-only events.”

Lower floor and a selection of classic vehicles

The site has already become a hub for specialist parts suppliers and builders, with Spondon Engineering already operating from the site.

“We are building a collective of skilled artisans which, once established, will enable us to deliver training schemes. We are hoping this will start in 2025,” GNC investor Simon Woods added.

The centre has been backed by Derby City Council and is housed in the 4.2-acre former Rolls Royce Heritage Centre.

Car lift and lounge area

Since being acquired by GNC, a glass atrium has been built, alongside a climate controlled storage area and a 7000 square foot mezzanine floor. There’s also space for outdoor events, for room with over 150 classic vehicles.
