Get your bite back: How to replace your clutch

It always amazes me how robust a motorcycle clutch can be, particularly on a sportsbike.

The power of the engine is transmitted entirely through the shared surface area of the friction and steel plates, and compressed by half a dozen springs – all whilst soaked in oil! Unlike tyres which handle the very same power, clutches can last for many, many thousands of miles.

When it does show signs of wear, the first symptom is slipping, but don’t forget to check the cable or pushrod free-play adjustment first before you go pulling the engine cover off, as quite often it just needs a bit of a tweak to the adjustment to restore performance rather than a new clutch.
