US scooter sales boom

1 of 1

Rising petrol prices are fuelling a massive rise in scooter sales in the US, a country traditionally associated with big bore cruisers.

Total scooter sales last year rose to 86,000, more than double the number sold in 2000, and many dealers are reporting even bigger growth this year.

Some firms are reporting as much as a 300 per cent rise in scooter sales from their stores in the last year alone, saying that at least 50 percent of owners are buying them as their primary transport to avoid high fuel costs and parking restrictions.
