Royal Enfield Himalayan to reach UK

Royal Enfield Himalayan in UK dealers in 2017

Royal Enfield have unveiled the Euro4 compliant Himalayan, announcing that it will be in European dealers by next year. This comes as something of a surprise, as the initial launch model could not meet the emissions regulations of Euro4 and Royal Enfield initially made no suggestion of their intention to bring the Himalayan to Europe because of that.

Speaking to MCN, Arun Gopal, Head of International Business, said “We have grown sales over 64% between 2010 to 2015. We are investing $64million in production and are expecting sales of up to 900k by 2018. Growth in developed markets is essential for this and Europe is very important to us, so it made sense to produce a Euro4 compliant version.”

The Himalayan marries the new long-stroke LS410 400cc engine, with a steel off-road capable frame designed by British firm, Harris Performance. Royal Enfield say that by designing the motorcycle to work in the rugged roads of the Himalayas, it makes it more than capable of taking on the rough and tumble of urban riding. The engine has been designed to deliver higher torque at low revs to make it easy to ride in the city, and also to be incredibly low maintenance – the engine can go 10,000km between oil changes. The LS410 engine is also smoother and more efficient than ever thanks to a new counter-balanced crankshaft that reduces rider fatigue on long trips, which is helpful as the 15l tank means it’s good for 300 miles between stops.

Pradeep Mathew, the Project Lead on the Himalayan, added “The Himalayan was designed with simplicity in mind, which is why it originally used a carburettor. To pass Euro4 we had to change this to fuel injection along with adding ABS, an automatic headlight and different tyres.”

What about pricing, especially due a currently weak pound? “Well when this bike was designed, it was for Indian markets,” says Gopal. “Royal Enfield is known for accessible pricing, so we’d like to keep it that way but right now it is very difficult for me to say. Give us a few more months and we’ll let you know.”
