Energica Experia electric tourer revealed at 2022 Mugello MotoGP and available to order now

Italian electric bike firm Energica have revealed a new road-biased adventure bike called the Experia. The plug-in tourer made its world debut at this past weekend’s Mugello MotoGP.

Available to order as of Wednesday June 1, the Experia is an upright, luggage laden packhorse that rolls on road-focussed 17in rims, with a carrying capacity of 112 litres with all three boxes attached.

Said to be the first of a range of models in a new Energica Green Tourer program, it also produces a claimed circa 101bhp at 7500rpm and is limited to 112mph – with no gear changes required to get there.

Although slightly down on petrol-powered competition like the Kawasaki Versys 1000, it gets a healthy claimed torque figure of 85ftlb at the wheel. It’s also stuffed with six-stage traction control, four riding modes, lean-sensitive Bosch ABS and more.

“We melded high-tech electric mobility with the roaming spirit of the motorcycle traveller,” Chief Technical Officer, Giampiero Testoni said in a statement. “The intention was to create the first electric motorcycle specifically for long-distance bike lovers.”

Powering the Experia is an all-new motor and battery combination, with Energica claiming to have increased battery capacity whilst reducing weight. The bike is also said to be more centralised, with a lower centre of gravity for greater control at low speed.

This battery capacity now stands at a maximum of 22.5kWh, which Energica say is the largest of all on any electric motorcycle. It can also be charged from 0-80% at a Level 3/DC Fast Charger in 40 minutes at a top rate of 24kW, with the option to also use conventional 240V and 120V plug-in points for longer stops or overnight charging.

Once juiced and ready to go, the motorcycle is propelled forwards by a new permanent magnet motor, positioned lower in the bike than on other Energica models. It’s also counter-rotating to reduce inertia – a system also used in topflight superbikes to keep the front of the bike planted on the tarmac under acceleration.

But just how far do you get on full charge? Well, Energica are claiming 153 miles, or 261 miles in urban areas. That’s not bad at all, but longer stops and charge points will need to be factored into every tour, which could become tedious over time.

Those interested in owning an Experia should head to the Energica website now, with the first Launch Editions sold with hard panniers and a top case. There will also be bar ends and bolts finished in back, plus heated grips and aluminium rims complete with red detailing.

All bikes will also get two USB ports in the dash, plus two more in a waterproof lockable storage compartment. It is said that the accessories list will grow over time, too.
