Defiant against thieves: New Squire lock ramps up protection against angle grinders

1 of 3

Squire have launched what they say is their toughest ever motorcycle brake disc lock, promising angle grinder resistance that should deter even the most tooled-up thief.

Named the Defiant, the £199.99 lock achieves the highest Sold Secure standard of Diamond and it’s claimed it can withstand an angle grinder attack for more than 90 seconds.

“This is the ultimate angle grinder resistant brake disc lock for your motorcycle and is testament to our reputation for toughness guaranteed,” Neil Hudson, Squire’s Two Wheel Brand Development Manager, told MCN. “Defiant offers the very best in on-the-go motorcycle security.”

To achieve Diamond level the Defiant is subjected to a five-minute manual attack test followed by the 90-second angle grinder attack using an 18V cordless power tool. The official test does not carry on past that point, but Squire say their own in-house testing has far exceeded this threshold.

This is achieved with construction combining a 25mm solid hardened steel body that’s coated in a heavy-duty armour which, it’s claimed, destroys multiple angle grinder discs while under attack.

Add to that a 12mm two-piece boron hardened steel shackle that slides through the disc, which is designed to counter attempted removal by force.

The key barrel features anti-drill, anti-pick and anti-bump technology with a possible 470,000 key options.

The 1.1kg device is weather and corrosion resistant, and coated in a bright yellow heavy-duty protective cover. A reminder cable is included, as is a neoprene pouch for easy storage of the unit, keys and cable, which can be attached using the integrated belt loop.
