James Stewart becomes AMA Rookie of the Year

1 of 1

James Stewart is the 2002 AMA Motocross/Supercross Rookie of the Year.

The 16-year-old began an impressive debut season with the AMA 125 Western Region Supercross Series in January, notching up three wins and a second place in the championship. He had won three rounds, more than any other rider, and only inconsistency handed the title to rival Chad Reed. Stewart shone at the East/West shootout however, totally dominating the race.

He made up for Supercross disappointment by becoming the first ever true rookie to win the AMA Motocross championship. His victory at the opening round at Glen Helen raceway in California began the most successful season any rider has had in AMA 125 Motocross, with a record 10 victories en route to the championship.

Previous award winners include Ricky Carmichael, Travis Pastrana and Jeff Stanton.
