Stefan Everts has claimed his eighth world MX title at the Grand Prix of Ireland at Ballykelly.

Everts took a second place in race one after losing the lead to championship rival Mickael Pichon, but it was enough for the multiple world champion to claim the title. Everts then celebrated by taking a record 78th GP win in the second race.

And Ben Townley was also able to celebrate after winning the MX2 championship on his KTM. The 19-year-old New Zealander sealed the title in style with wins in both motos. The first moto was led by team-mate Marc de Reuver until mechanical problems gifted Townley victory. The second race was led by Townley from the start, and claimed the title from fellow KTM rider Tyla Rattray who finished the meeting with a second place and a fifth.

“It’s an amazing feeling to take the Championship,” said Townley. “On that last lap i was riding around and realised all the work I had put in through my whole riding career had paid off.”

The final round of the championship takes place at Sun City in South Africa on September 25/26.
