Stewart starts with win

1 of 1

James Stewart has won the opening round of the 2006 AMA Supercross series, showing his skill in passing both leader Chad Reed and off-road legend Ricky Carmichael.

Stewart suffered a bad start in the final, as did Carmichael, with Kyle Lewis getting the holeshot. Ernesto Fonseca took the lead briefy, until on lap five, the big three of Carmichael, Reed and Stewart pushed through to the front.

It was a shortlived battle as Carmichael fell in the whoop section just one lap later. He was able to restart the makita Suzuki RM-Z450, and eventually recovered to third place.

Stewart meanwhile managed to capitalise on a mistake by leader Reed, and managed to pull out a four second lead.

In the 125cc class, Honda’s Andrew Short took the win from Ryan Villopoto.
