Shakey out of action

Shane Byrne has been ruled out of this weekend’s Snetterton round of the Bennett’s British Superbike championship after being knocked out in a horror crash when his brakes failed at near top speed.

The former champion was on one of the fastest bits of track in British racing, the Revett Straight, and when he went for the brakes at the end of the 180+mph stretch the lever came back to the bar, and he was forced to fold the front.

Shakey and his Rizla Suzuki GSX-R1000 careened all the way across the grass and slid back across the track at the peel-in point to the Bombhole corner.

He was out cold for two minutes, and a rule which says any rider knocked out is barred from racing for eight days means he won’t ride any more this weekend. Aside from the sore head, he is otherwise uninjured.

Jon Kirkham, who normally rides for Scuderia Stellare Suzuki, has been drafted in to ride Shakey’s bike, while British Supersport Piranah racing rider Simon Andrews will take Kirkham’s place.
