Fourteen year old Toriano Wilson was tragically killed racing in the Red Bull AMA US Rookies Cup at Virginia International Raceway on Sunday.

The young rider from Bermuda crashed during the opening lap of the race and was then hit by Argentinean Luciano Ribodino. Wilson was airlifted to the UNC Medical Centre but succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead on Monday morning.

Wilson had qualified in eight place for the race and coming into the weekend held eighth overall in the championship standings having secured a best result of fourth in the opening round of the series.

As part of the Red Bull AMA US Rookies Cup, Wilson had received coaching from former 500GP World Champion Kevin Schwantz and was seen as one of the most promising riders in the series.

Ribodino, the rider that unavoidably struck Wilson, suffered a broken arm and Femur in the accident, but is expected to make a full recovery.
