Double World Superbike Champion Jonathan Rea has been awarded an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours.

The 30-year-old from Larne, Northern Ireland becomes one of just a handful of motorcycle racers, including Carl Fogarty, Joey Dunlop, sidecar ace Steve Webster and Maria Costello, to be awarded the prestigious Member of the Order of the British Empire accolade.

Last year Rea became the first rider since Fogarty to win back-to-back World Superbike titles and is currently on track to become the first rider in history to win the crown in three consecutive seasons with a healthy lead in the championship standings over team-mate Tom Sykes.

The award will no doubt be welcomed by the motorcycle community with such recognition for motorcycle racers something of a rarity in the current age.
