Andrews riding with broken wrist

Simon Andrews has been racing his MSS Colchester Kawasaki for the past four weeks with a broken scaphoid in his left wrist.

The injury was sustained during a test at Snetterton ahead of the BSB round there but wasn’t diagnosed until yesterday (Friday 6th July).

Andrews explained: ”We tested at Snetterton and we had made a change to the bike. Unfortunately an o-ring split and we sprung an oil leak. The bike low sided at the chicane then caught and chucked me off and I hurt my wrist. I had another session after that so my wrist was really swollen. I went to hospital a couple of days later and had an x-ray which didn’t show anything so I was told it was ligament damage.”

The injury continued to hurt so following free practice at Knockhill, Andrews visited the medical centre for some physio.  They decided to x-ray it again and this time a broken scaphoid showed up. It has been broken right across and due to lack of blood flow part of the bone is dieing.

Andrews said: “I’ve got a choice, I can leave it until the end of the season but that means the bone will die and I’ll need a bone graph. I can have it pinned and put in a cast or I can have it plated. Either way it will take about six weeks to recover. We had looked at having the operation next week and sitting out Mallory as there is a bit of a break and then I’d be ready for Brands Hatch. Unfortunately I’m struggling to find a surgeon.”

Despite the injury Andrews is still riding well and he finished third free practice in fourth.
