BSB: Gino Rea to make BSB debut with new OMG Racing team

World Supersport race winner Gino Rea will make his British Superbike debut in 2018 as he joins the OMG Racing team.

Racing a Suzuki GSX-R1000 for the all-new set-up run by former Superstock racer Paul Curran, Rea will be looking to bounce back from a tough year on the world stage with the Go Eleven Kawasaki team.

Rea won the European Superstock 600 championship in 2009 before moving to World Supersport, where he impressed with a home podium at Silverstone in his debut season.

Between 2012-14 he spent three seasons in Moto2, but struggled despite showing promise with a second-place finish in the wet at Sepang in 2012. He then returned to World Supersport where he achieved a best championship finish of sixth in 2015.

“I have wanted to make the step up onto a Superbike for several years now but the right package hasn’t presented itself, until now,” Rea said.

“After meeting with the OMG Racing team and hearing their professionalism and attitude towards racing and their will to succeed, I knew immediately that this is the right move. The new Suzuki GSX-R1000 has huge potential having already won a race in BSB, so combined with the team’s acquirement of Ray Stringer (ex-Sylvain Guintoli and Luke Mossey crew chief) as my crew chief, I jumped at this opportunity to make my move into the Superbike category.

“I know how important it is to not only have a good bike, but also the right people around a rider and I feel those boxes are ticked with OMG Racing.”
