Joey Thompson will make his Bennetts British Superbike Championship debut this season after signing for NP Motorcycles BMW.

Thompson moves up from the Quattro Group British GP2 Championship after securing a best result of fourth in 2020 at Snetterton and Silverstone. The York-based rider rode for Spirit Moto Corsa GP2 alongside Mason Law.

Alongside his short circuit efforts, Thompson has enjoyed success on the roads. He made his Isle of Man TT debut in 2017, achieving a career-best finish the following year with fifth place in the Lightweight race. Thompson is also a North West 200 podium finisher – narrowly missing out on a Supertwin victory in 2018.

“I am so excited to get started in the British Superbike class; I have done a lot of road racing and had success at the TT, Ulster and North West 200,” Thompson said. “I have been given an opportunity of a lifetime so I can’t thank Neil and all my personal sponsors enough for giving me this chance!

“I have been in and out of the BSB paddock for eight years now and to race in the premier class is a dream come true. I have no aims this season, I just look forward to building a strong relationship within the team, and to keep improving throughout the year.”

The first official BSB pre-season test takes place at Silverstone on April 28-29, followed by a three-test test at Snetterton the following week (May 4-6). The opening round of the 2021 is due to take place at Oulton Park on June 25-27.
