BSB Cadwell Park: Glenn Irwin tastes victory in his 200th race

1 of 6

Glenn Irwin was victorious in his 200th Bennetts British Superbike Championship race after holding off the challenge of Kyle Ryde and Ryan Vickers at Cadwell Park.

Irwin took the lead away from Vickers on the opening lap and held his position, bar from a few seconds at Charlie’s on lap 11, for the remainder of the race.

Despite being glued to the back wheel of Irwin’s BeerMonster Ducati V4 R, neither Vickers nor Ryde could put a move on the Northern Irishman.

It’s Irwin’s 14th BSB win and his first since Knockhill in June when he completed the double. The win moves Irwin to within 19.5 points of teammate and championship Tommy Bridewell, who had to settle for fifth this afternoon.

Meanwhile, Ryde managed to get the better of Vickers on the final lap to take his first podium since the trip to Scotland. It’s Ryde’s seventh podium of the season, whilst Vickers now has six to his name after crossing the line in third.

Jason O’Halloran was best of the rest in fourth spot onboard McAMS Yamaha, battling back after losing some ground at the start of the race. The Aussie had joined the leading trio on the final lap and was ready and waiting to pounce should there be any incidents up ahead.

Lee Jackson finished his home race in sixth for Cheshire Mouldings Kawasaki, coming home ahead of Christian Iddon and Josh Brookes. Peter Hickman, who did the double at Cadwell Park in 2021, was ninth, whilst Jack Kennedy completed the top 10.

Tom Neave and Bradley Perie were 11th and 12th respectively, with Franco Bourne finishing his first-ever Cadwell Park Superbike race in 13th. Jack Scott and Luke Mossey secured the final two points available.

Charlie Nesbitt, who injured his foot in a crash at the Mountain during FP4, crashed out of the race on lap six, whilst Storm Stacey also retired from the race.

Leon Haslam was forced to retire with a bike problem whilst in a podium position. Despite this, Haslam had already posted the fastest lap of the race (1:26.253) and will start race two from pole position on Monday afternoon.

Monday’s races are due to take place at 13:15 and 16:15.

Cadwell Park Race One Result

Ryan Vickers secured his maiden Bennetts British Superbike Championship pole position at Cadwell Park this afternoon.

The original Superpole format was scrapped due to rain in the local area, and was replaced by the traditional timed session. With rain on the way, the riders knew they had to get a fast lap-time in as soon as possible.

Vickers posted a lap-time of 1:25.847 onboard his LAMI OMG Racing Yamaha R1 to take top spot with an advantage of 0.048s over Leon Haslam. With rain falling half-way through the session, nobody was able to beat Vickers’ time.

Glenn Irwin will line-up alongside Vickers and Haslam in this afternoon’s sprint race, whilst Kyle Ryde heads row two. Ryde went back out towards the end of the session once the rain had stopped, and was able to move up a single position as a result.

Jason O’Halloran completes the top five for McAMS Yamaha. The Aussie was visibly frustrated after getting stuck behind another rider whilst on a fast lap. Lee Jackson completes the second row for Cheshire Mouldings Kawasaki.

Championship leader Tommy Bridewell qualified seventh and will be joined on the third row by Christian Iddon and Peter Hickman. Josh Brookes completes the top 10 onboard the second of the FHO Racing BMW M1000RRs.

Jack Kennedy, Storm Stacey, Bradley Perie and Tom Neave were the final qualifiers from the Q2 session.

Luke Mossey was the best of the rest in Q1 and will start the sprint race at Cadwell Park from 15th. Franco Bourne and Luke Stapleford qualified 16th and 17th respectively, whilst Jack Scott, Hector Barbera and Louis Valleley complete the grid.

Charlie Nesbitt missed the qualifying session after crashing at the Mountain during FP4. Nesbitt was taken to the medical centre as a result.

Max Cook and Danny Buchan have been ruled out of the weekend following crashes earlier in the weekend, whilst Josh Owens is also missing through injury.

The opening BSB race of the weekend at Cadwell Park is due to begin at 17:00 this afternoon.

Cadwell Park Qualifying Result

Jason O’Halloran heads into the Bennetts British Superbike Championship race days at Cadwell Park as the man to beat after topping Saturday’s combined practice times.

Heavy rainfall in the afternoon meant that no riders were able to improve their lap-times during FP2. O’Halloran topped FP1 in the morning with a 1:25.667, which was quick enough to pip Kyle Ryde to top spot by 0.097s.

Ryan Vickers made it a Yamaha one-two-three on the second of the LAMI Omg Racing R1s, whilst Storm Stacey and Glenn Irwin completed the top five.

Josh Brookes was the leading BMW rider in sixth, ahead of local favourite Lee Jackson and Christian Iddon. Charlie Nesbitt, fresh from bagging his maiden BSB podiums at Thruxton, was ninth, whilst Peter Hickman, another local hero at Cadwell Park, completed the top 10.

Leon Haslam and championship leader Tommy Bridewell were the final two riders to automatically qualify for tomorrow’s Superpole qualifying session.

Jack Kennedy was the best of the rest in 13th but will have to go through Q1 on his Mar-Train Yamaha, as will Tom Neave (14th) and Luke Mossey (15th). Franco Bourne the day 16th overall on his first visit to Cadwell Park on a Superbike.

Max Cook and Danny Buchan will take no further part this weekend at Cadwell Park. Cook crashed during Friday evening’s test session and after feeling less than 100% after a couple of laps in FP1, has opted to sit the meeting out.

Meanwhile, Buchan crashed at the bottom of the Mountain in FP1 and appeared to take a knock to the head. The SYNETIQ BMW rider has been taken to Hull Royal Infirmary for precautionary checks.

Danny Kent is also absent due to “circumstances beyond the team’s control,” whilst Tito Rabat and McAMS Yamaha have gone their separate ways after three rounds together.

Tomorrow’s opening qualifying session (August 27) is due to take place at 13:30, and this will be followed by the Superpole session at 14:00. The top three riders from Q1 will join the top 12 in the Superpole session.

The opening BSB race of the weekend at Cadwell is scheduled for 17:00 on Sunday afternoon, whilst Bank Holiday Monday’s races are due to take place at 13:15 and 16:15.
