Loris Capirossi showed why Ducati has kept his services for 2006 with a lap record pole position at Motegi in Japan.

Capirossi took his Bridgetone-shod Ducati Desmosedici around the circuit in 1:46.363, almost 0.5 seconds quicker than fellow Bridgestone runner John Hopkins on the Suzuki GSV-R. But Michelin also have a bike on the front row with Marco Melandri taking third place on the grid.

Valentino Rossi could win the title this weekend, but he has given himself quite a challenge. Miscalculating the end of the session, he missed passing the chequered flag by three seconds, leaving himself without a final qualifying lap. This has put him down in 11th place on the grid, starting between Alex Barros and Alex Hoffmann. Yamaha team-mate Colin edwards also had a disapointing session, qualifying in 13th.

Exclusive: Shane Byrne will ride a Honda RC211V for the next two rounds. Find out more, here.

Britian’s James Ellison has qualified in 21st position, just 0.070 behind Blata WCM team-mate Franco Battaini.
