MotoGP rookie Chris Vermeulen has taken a surprise pole position for the Turkish Grand Prix on Sunday, April 30, as wet weather affected the qualifying session.

The Rizla Suzuki rider qualified with a time of 2:04.617, slower than the dry times on Friday, which was enough to take the first spot on the grid. Throughout the session it looked as if Honda’s Nicky Hayden would secure pole, leading throughout the last half hour and on course to beat Vermeulen until he left the track. Hayden still remained second fastest, with the Ducatis of Sete Gibernau and Loris Capirossi third and fourth. Rizla Suzuki could also celebrate John Hopkins fifth place on the grid, just ahead of the Kawasaki of Randy de Puniet and the LCR Honda of Casey Stoner. Stoner had already crashed twice in free practice for the last race in which he could become the youngest ever MotoGP race winner.

Reigning world champion Valentino Rossi will start from 11th on the grid, two places behind team-mate Colin Edwards. Britain’s James Ellison will start from 19th, having qualified almost one second behind 18th quickest Jose Luis Cardoso. To see the full list of times, click here.

Rain also affected the 250 GP qualifying, with Anthony West showing his rain riding skills with 2:09.527, two seconds quicker than anyone else. But pole position will go to Jorge Lorenzo on the Fortuna Honda with his first session time of 1:57.841. he’ll head Alex de Angelis on the Master MVA Aspar Aprilia with 1:58.482, and Andrea Dovizioso for Humangest honda with 1:58.865.
