Vermeulen on US pole

1 of 1

Chris Vermeulen has taken his first dry pole position by setting the fastest lap in qualifying for the US GP at Laguna Seca.

The Australian Suzuki rider beat a hoard of Americans to take the top spot with a 1:23.168 lap, beating Colin Edwards by almost two tenths off a second.

Kenny Roberts finishes the front row of the grid after dominating the first day of practice for the event while rookie Dani Pedrosa managed to squeeze himself in to fourth place despite never having ridden the track before.

Vermeulen’s team-mate John Hopkins and championship leader and last year’s race winner Nicky Hayden finish the second row.

Valentino Rossi only managed to qualify in tenth place behind Casey Stoner, Shinya Nakano and Marco Melandri.

The race can be seen at 10pm UK time.
