Mugello: Gibernau pole

Sete Gibernau and Loris Capirossi have put their Marlboro Ducatis on the first two grid positions for the Mugello Grand Prix, with Gibernau posting a time of 1:48.969 to take pole position.

The fastest time was 0.2 seconds under the 2005 pole position time of Valentino Rossi, who had to settle for third on the grid on the Camel Yamaha with 1:49.167. The second row will consists of Nicky Hayden, Shinya Nakano and Marco Melandri.

Jorge Lorenzo heads the 250cc GP grid, posting a time of 1:53.787 in qualifying. Yuki Takahashi is second with 1:54.174, followed by Roberto Locatelli with 1:54.309. Alex De Angelis is fourth fastest, followed by Dovizioso, Simoncelli, Barbera and Smrz. Britain’s Dan Linfoot has qualified in 25th on the Teng Tools Winona Racing Honda with a time of 1:58.593. The 125cc grid will be led by Lukas Pesek on the Derbi, qualifying with 1:58.202 from the MVA Aspar Hondas of Mattia Pasini and Hector Faubel. Fabrizio Lai qualifies in fourth, and Alvaro Bautista is fifth. Despite promising times in practice, Britain’s Bradley Smith ends up in a lowly 32nd position on the Repsol Honda, three seconds slower than the fastest time. To see the full time sheet, click here.

Loris Capirossi has gone fastest in the final free practice session for the Mugello MotoGP round with a lap of 1:50.272 on his final lap of the session.

The Italian is just outside the circuit record lap, set by Max Biaggi in 2005, and his time put him ahead of the works Repsol Honda of Nicky Hayden (1:50.474) and the Camel Yamaha of Valentino Rossi (1:50.478) who had both previous practice sessions from Capirossi.

Sete Gibernau is fourth quickest, with Colin Edwards fifth. Dani Pedrosa has again improved, from 15th in the first practice session, to ninth, while Britain’s James Ellison moves up to 17th fasest, right behind Tech 3 Yamaha team-mate Carlos Checa. Ellison’s time of 1:53.907 puts him ahead of Alex Hofmann and Jose Luis Cardoso. To see the full time sheet, click here.

In 250cc free practice Hector Barbera has gone fastest with 1:54.785, from Fortuna Aprilia team-mate Jorge Lorenzo. Aprilia machines fill the top seven places with Alex De Angelis third down to Sylvain Guintoli in seventh. Top non-Honda is Yuki Takahashi for Honda. Chaz Davies fans might be disapointed to see replacement Franco Battaini go sixth fastest, but Britain’s Dan Linfoot has moved up to 27th fastest on the Teng Tools Winona Racing Honda. In 125cc free practice Mattia Pasini has gone fastest for Master-MVA Aspar Aprilia with 2:00.842 from the KTM of Mika Kallio (2:00.950). Simone Corsi is third fastest.
