Rossi wins dramatic GP

Valenitino Rossi has taken his third win of 2006 after a dramatic GP at Catalunya.

The race was red flagged after just one corner after a massive pile-up that saw Sete Gibernau, Marco Melandri, Loris Capirossi, John Hopkins, Dani Pedrosa and Randy De Puniet all off the track.

Gibernau caught his front break lever on Capirossi’s bike on the entrance to the corner and was flipped over the bars causing the disaster.

Gibernau broke his collar bone, Melandri dislocated his collar bone and has suspected neck problems and Capirossi has suspected internal bleed so all were helicoptered to hospital.

The race was restarted within 15 minutes with all the other riders back on the grid, but Chris Vermeulen stalled his bike and the second start was delayed.

The delay caused Shinya Nakano’s Kawasaki to overheat on the grid and he jumped the pit wall to get on his second bike. However the Japanese rider was penalised with a ride through penalty because he didn’t start from the back of the grid with his new bike.

When he didn’t come in to take the penalty he was black flagged and disqualified.

Casey Stoner was leading the race while Rossi worked his way up from fifth place but crashed soon after he lost the lead to the Italian.

Dani Pedrosa, Randy De Puniet and Tony Elias also crashed out of the race proper.

Nicky Hayden was the only man to threaten Rossi but even he could not catch the Camel Yamaha rider.

The big battle of the race was for third place as Suzuki’s John Hopkins puton a great show with Kenny Roberts Junior on the KR211V.

Eventually Roberts won out to take the team’s first podium position in 10 years.

Rossi is now just 29 points short of Hayden in the championship and only nine points behind Capriossi.
