Veteran MotoGP rider Sete Gibernau has announced his retirement from the sport with immediate effect.

The 33-year-old called a press conference on Wednesday, November 8 where he told reporters he would be hanging up his helmet.

The Spaniard has been plagued by injury this season while riding for Ducati. Despite 11 years in the MotoGP World Championship and offers for 2007 he felt it was time to retire.

Gibernau said: “I am going out at the top, accomplishing a small dream of mine – to be happy.

“I dreamt of being World Champion and I have enjoyed myself winning races, leading the championship, coming second twice. I have come further than I ever could have imagined.”
