Kallio proves popularity

F1 driver Kimi Raikkonen, who replaces Michael Schumacher at Ferrari next year, has been beaten in the Finnish motorsport’s man of the year poll by motorcycle rider Mika Kallio.

Kallio, runner up 125cc class for the past two seasons, took 33.1 percent of the vote, which also saw off Ford’s world rally driver, Marcus Gronholm.

In the poll, organised by the YLE 2 television station and national motorsport annual Ruutulippu, Kallio was eventual runner-up to French WRC champion Sebastien Loeb.

Kallio said: “This clearly shows that MotoGP has become more and more popular in Finland, where we have always had strong traditions in rallying and Formula One.”
