Rossi goes rallying

He has barely turned a wheel in anger, but the World Rally Championship barely knows what has hit it with the hype prior to Valentino Rossi’s participance in this weekend’s New Zeland Rally already on overdrive.

Rossi is driving a Subaru Impreza WRC in the rally, and despite clouting a bank in a ‘prelude’ time-trial event for the fans today – the rally proper starts Friday – all the talk is centring on the chance that the MotoGP legend might take up rallying after he quits bikes.

Only last week, Rossi sparked life back into talk of a future in F1 after a test for Mercedes DTM in Germany, and now the boss of Subaru Dave Richards has said that he would love to get Rossi in his cars full time.

Rossi has said rallying is his favourite form of racing after bikes.

Meanwhile the established stars of rallying have been bemused to say the least at all the attention Rossi is creating in the rally. Fans are mobbing and cheering the Italian wherever he goes, much to the chagrin of some of the larger-egoed rally men.
