Chad Reed won his first AMA Supercross Series race of the year aboard a Yamaha at Qualcomm Stadium, San Diego in front of 60,529 fans.

Although Suzuki’s Ivan Tedesco won the race to the first corner Reed moved into the lead by the end of the first lap while Kawasaki’s James Stewart pulled into second place on lap two.

Stewart passed Reed for the lead where he stayed until lap eight when he crashed taking off over the startline jump and dropped to seventh.

Reed rode off to win from Kawasaki’s Tim Ferry. Honda’s Kevin Windham finished a season-best third place.

Reed said: “I love this place. I have had so many great races here, and this is huge for me. Second place was getting really old. It’s a shame to see James crash like that, but this is a big relief for me because I know I can win.”

Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto clinched the Western Regional AMA Supercross Lites title, marking his sixth win of the season.

Starting in third place, he made a quick charge around Martin Davalos’s KTM on lap one and passed team-mate Chris Gosselaar on lap two. Villopoto went on to ride the next 13 laps flawlessly en route to the title and said: “I am so ecstatic right now. I had a great start in my heat race, then a great start in the main.”
