Dani Pedrosa injury update

The Repsol Honda team has still not ruled out the possibility of Dani Pedrosa participating in this weekend’s American GP after he underwent further medical examinations in Barcelona today.

The triple world champion crashed out of a commanding lead during yesterday’s rain-lashed German GP at the Sachsenring and suffered hand and ankle injuries that threaten to rule him out of action this weekend at Laguna Seca.

Pedrosa, who lost the MotoGP world championship points lead to Valentino Rossi, spent the night in a Barcelona hospital where was examined Drr Xavier Mir and his medical team.

Pedrosa hit the trackside air fence and Dr Mir said he had suffered a general swelling on his left hand, with tendon damage. He also has a displaced fracture of his left index finger and damage to his left middle finger. Fears of a fractured right ankle though have been cleared, with Pedrosa suffering only a sprain.

He will remain in hospital before doctors decide whether he is fit enough to fly to California to ride in Sunday’s 32-lap American GP.

Dr Mir said:  “Dani Pedrosa presents a general inflammation of the left hand with hematomas in the sheathes of both extending tendons. The pilot shows a displaced fracture of the distal phalanx of the left pointing finger, which has been reduced.

“Further on, the patient presents a sprain of the proximal interphalaxical joint of the middle finger of the left hand which has been totally immobilized.

“Finally, he has undergone a fixation of a fracture of the big bone of the left wrist by an arthroscopic technique. It is confirmed that the patient has suffered a lateral external sprain of the right ankle.”
