Jorge Lorenzo described his stunning pole position lap in Japan today as ‘amazing’.

The Fiat Yamaha rider claimed his first pole since the Estoril GP in Portugal way back at the third race of the season with a brilliant display at the Twin Ring Motegi today.

The 21-year-old clocked a best time of 1.45.543 to beat the previous pole record by 0.181s and he said: “ It was an amazing lap for me. A 45.5 I didn’t think was possible but when I tried the first qualifier I thought I could make it and I thought I could get pole position.

“It is a fantastic result for us after too many crashes and too many injuries this season. It is a long time since my last pole position in Estoril so this is a very good result. “I was able to ride so fast all day today, a big improvement from yesterday, and this result tastes better than the pole positions in the first three races and I can’t wait for tomorrow because I think the fans will watch a very good race.

“Yesterday I didn’t find a very good set-up with the track wet in the morning and not perfect in the afternoon. Today I improved by two seconds and I felt much better and I think I have a chance of the victory tomorrow.”
