British teenager Bradley Smith made a bright start to his 2009 pre-season preparations when he clocked the second fastest time on the opening day of testing in Jerez.

Making his second appearance for the Aspar Aprilia team, the Oxfordshire rider posted a best time of 1.49.313 as he completed 48 laps in sunny but cool conditions.

Smith was only beaten by team-mate Julian Simon, who was fastest with a best time of 1.48.875.

Fellow British rider Scott Redding also made a positive start with the Gloucestershire 16-year-old clocking the fifth best time in his 41-lap stint.

Redding, who became the youngest rider in history last year at Donington Park to win a Grand Prix, set a best time of 1.50.834 as he ran 41 laps on the Blusens Aprilia.
