Suzuki boss: MotoGP is main priority

Suzuki’s need to be more competitive in MotoGP and World Superbikes was the reason for the Japanese factory not bidding for the exclusive engine supply deal for the new Moto2 600 class.

Dorna boss Carmelo Ezpeleta recently told MCN that he was surprised that only Honda and Yamaha submitted formal proposals to land the Moto2 engine supply contract.

But Rizla Suzuki team manager Paul Denning explained to MCN the reasons why Suzuki opted not to bid for the Moto2 deal in 2010  “As it sits at the moment, Suzuki needs to concentrate on core elements of its racing programme.

“WSB is very important to Suzuki and the performance isn’t quite there as much as they’d like.

“Keeping the MotoGP programme developing forward in difficult economic circumstances is a bigger priority.

“For us to be competitive in MotoGP and get the bike closer to the podium consistently is far more important than supporting a one engine championship. There’s a resource issue to worry about too in terms of service and it’s not just a question of supplying engines.

“You need a lot of technical support behind it as well. In fairness I think Dorna would rather see Suzuki’s potential expansion in the MotoGP class than anything else.

“Suzuki very much appreciated being considered but at the moment it is not right for them,“ said Denning.
Honda beat Yamaha to the Moto2 supply deal during last weekend’s Spanish GP in Jerez.
