Mugello MotoGP: Espargaro takes Moto2 pole position

Kalex rider Pol Espargaro will start tomorrow’s 21 lap race from pole position after stealing the top spot from title rival Marc Marquez in the dying moments of qualifying.

Despite setting the third fastest time of the session, Johann Zarco will start from 18th place on the grid after receiving a penalty from race direction. Zarco crashed into Espargaro during this morning’s session and was handed a 15 place penalty on his grid position for tomorrow’s race.

Italian Andrea Iannone will move up to third spot on the grid.

Britain’s Bradley Smith set the seventh fastest time onboard his Tech 3 machine, the Brit crashing out at the very end of the session, ending his chances of moving further up the grid.

Fellow Brit Scott Redding struggled onboard his Kalex machine, spending most of the session outside the top 10. Redding set the eighth fastest time of the session.

Gino Rea set the 25th fastest time.
