German Moto2: Torres takes surprise victory

1 of 1

Jordi Torres was the unexpected winner of today’s Moto2 race at the Saschenring, in a race that was unhelpful to the fortunes of the leading championship contenders.

Torres was part of an early four man break, spending most of the race in second behind Pol Espargaro and ahead of Simone Corsi and Julian Simon. Simon was the first to drop back, after a series of errors dropped him from contention.

Torres then made a move on Espargaro with a third distance to go, and was immediately able to pull away a lead and leaving Espargaro to battle with Corsi.

Corsi was able to set himself up into an excellent position, forcing Espargaro into running just wide enough to let him through on the last lap.

Corsi’s teammate Alex de Angelis was fifth, having made a late move of his own on Thomas Luthi to take the spot. Scott Redding was seventh behind Luthi, having never managed to challenge in the race at all.

However, the demotion of Espargaro from first to third helps reduce the blow, meaning he has only conceded seven points of his championship lead to the Spaniard.

FTR wildcard Gino Rea was the only other Brit to see the chequered flag, crossing the line in 24th, with both Danny Kent and Kyle Smith fallers.
