Breaking news: Marquez breaks leg

1 of 1

MotoGP world champion Marc Marquez has suffered a broken fibula in a training crash just weeks before the start of the 2014 season.

The 21 year old was flat tracking in in Lleida, west of Barcelona, yesterday afternoon, when he suffered the spiral fracture of the distal third of his right fibula. He was immediately rushed to the renowned Universitario Quirón Dexeus Hospital, where Doctor Xavier Mir, doctor to the MotoGP stars, treated him.

After a CT scan and X-ray, Dr Mir commented: “The results showed no ligament damage or dislocation and no need to proceed with surgery. I expect he will need 3-4 weeks to fully recover”

Marquez will certainly miss the next MotoGP test in Sepang in two weeks, as well as the tyre test scheduled for the following week at Phillip Island, but is expected to be fit for the first round in Qatar in one month.
