Marc Marquez has laid down a marker to his rivals in the opening practice session of this year’s British Grand Prix, finishing nearly 0.4 clear of the Yamaha duo of Jorge Lorenzo and Valentino Rossi.

Even then, Lorenzo and Rossi were well clear of the rest of the field, with Andrea Iannone in fourth nearly a second back on Marquez, with teammate Andrea Dovizioso fifth.

Scott Redding was the surprise best of the Brits, taking sixth spot from Bradley Smith and Dani Pedrosa. Pol Espargaro was ninth, and Cal Crutchlow rounded out the top ten on the second of the satellite Hondas.
