Moto3: Mir extends championship lead as rivals stumble

1 of 1

Joan Mir has extended his Moto3 championship further to a huge 37 points as the series enters the summer break, after taking a controlled last lap victory over Romano Fenati as many of their championship rivals stumbled behind them.

Mir, Fenati and an impressive ride from Marcos Ramirez were able to make a break at the front of the duel at the German Grand Prix, pulling out clear of the chasing pack to decide the podium between them. Mir picked his moment perfectly, striking on the last lap to take the lead from Fenati, whose second place was enough for second in the title race.

Nicolo Bulega was a strong fourth place for the Team Sky KTM team ahead of local favourite Philipp Oettl, with Enea Bastianini rounding out the top six.

However, it was a disaster for the other championship contenders, with Fabio Di Giannantonio eleventh, Andrea Migno out of the points in 16th, and last week’s winner Aron Canet in the gravel.

It was also a disappointing race for the Brits, with both Honda Talent Team rider John McPhee and Red Bull KTM replacement rider Danny Kent both crashing out of the race uninjured.
