Moto3: Crash culminates tough weekend for McPhee

British Talent Team Honda rider John McPhee’s difficult weekend at the San Marino Grand Prix was brought to an unfortunate end when the Scottish rider fell out of Sunday’s race at the Misano circuit, throwing away what he says was a sure fire top five finish.

One of over half the field who fell during the torrential rain conditions of the race, McPhee said afterwards that with conditions the way they were, he did the best he could despite nonetheless leaving disappointed.

“Conditions already in warm-up were quite difficult, and in the race with more standing water it was much more slippery. It’s difficult. The crash I had wasn’t actually on the gas, I’d rolled out the gas because I was running a bit wide and just with engine braking it was enough to break the rear away and it spun round on me. Really tricky conditions, and all I can say is sorry to the team.

“It was a really difficult weekend overall, and I’m gutted it ended the way it did when staying on the bike was all we had to do for a top five. I was wary of the corner where I crashed and I had had a few warnings, but Antonelli crashed in front of me and I rolled out – and doing that was enough for just the engine braking to grip and bring the rear around on me.”
