Moto3 rookie Aron Canet was a surprise topper of the timesheets at the end of the opening day of action at the Dutch TT, impressing on his first visit to the track to finish 0.113 ahead of fellow Honda rider Niccolò Antonelli.

His time came after he bounced back from a tricky opening session in damp conditions this morning, highsiding out at turn eight.

Nicolo Bulega was third, on the first of the KTMs with the Team Sky VR46 machine, while Livio Loi was a surprise leader of the second row in fourth, only 0.177 back on the leader. Gabriel Rodrigo and the second Team Sky bike of Romano Fenati rounded out the top six.

Championship leader Brad Binder took no risks to finish the session back in 14th, just ahead of Scottish wet weather specialist John McPhee. The returning Danny Webb, out of Moto3 for three years, finished his first day back in 31st.

Jorge Martin (Aspar Mahindra Team Moto3) chose to withdraw from the weekend due to pain from his still healing right wrist. He’ll be replaced by Albert Arenas.
