Riders applaud bold decision to cancel Senior TT

John McGuinness and his rivals were ruing the loss of the Senior TT, which succumbed to bad weather for the first time since the event started back in 1907.

After a race week hammered by difficult weather conditions this was the most difficult decision rookie TT Clerk of the Course Gary Thompson MBE BEM had to make, but one that was applauded by the riders.

A disappointed McGuinness explained: “Obviously I wanted to race. I was up for it today because I wanted to take the dolly home (the Senior trophy). But it was too sketchy. Lightly cut slicks on a superbike? You’ve no chance.”

Guy Martin sympathised with the organisers too. “It’s a pity. We’ve not had the best of week’s but all that would have been forgotten if we had a good run in the Senior (on the Tyco Suzuki). But they made the right decision.”

Bruce Anstey, having won the first Supersport TT and having finished third in the Superbike TT was also looking forward to the Senior. “I was feeling really good today. Really strong. But what can you do. You never know what’s going to happen with the weather in the Isle of Man.
