Roads: Ulster Grand Prix returns to road racing calendar

The Ulster Grand Prix will return to the road racing calendar this year following a two-year absence due to Covid-19 and financial issues.

This year’s event will be promoted by the Revival Racing Motorcycle club and will be staged on August 16-20 at the Dundrod circuit. The club also runs the Classic Bike Festival Ireland event.

Previous organisers, The Dundrod and District Motorcycle Club, went into a Company Voluntary Arrangement with its creditors last year after being unable to resolve their financial woes – believed to have been around £300,000. It was also reported that some riders did not receive their prize money in 2019.

Today’s statements said:

“We understand the unique appeal of the UGP to riders and fans alike, and we are delighted to bring racing back to this famous track. It’s been a very uncertain time for the sport because of Coronavirus and we can’t wait to hear bikes roaring down the Flying Kilo again this summer.

“We are indebted to the volunteers at the Ulster Grand Prix for their collaboration and continuing hard work to stage this famous race in its centenary year.

“More details of the week-long race programme will be announced soon.”

The Ulster GP regained its title of The World’s Fastest Road Race’ in 2019 when Peter Hickman produced an average speed of 136.415mph on his way to winning the opening Superbike race.

It’s been a positive week for road racing fans. On Tuesday (January 11) the dates for this year’s North West 200 were confirmed. The 2022 event will take place on May 8-14.
