Australian former World Superbike star Anthony Gobert will race in a world championship for the first time since 2000.

Gobert, 31, will replace the injured David Checa in the Yamaha GMT94 World Supersport team for the opening two rounds of the championship in Qatar and Australia.

Gobert broke into WSB in 1994 with a win at Phillip Island in Australia, and won again at the track on an underpowered Bimota in 2000. He’s raced in both American and Australian national championships for the last six years while dealing with various personal problems.

“I’m really happy to have the opportunity to get back into the world series with a good team and bike,” said Gobert. “I took a few years to work out what I wanted to do and I’ve realized that it is to get back into racing. I race in Australia last year and it looked like I might be doing that again. I raced supersport for Yamaha US in 2001 and 2002 but the bikes have changed a lot since then. It’s a new track, team, tyres and bike for me, and I haven’t ridden for five months, so the goal in Qatar is to get a good set-up and hopefully a top ten.”
