Bayliss tops Assen times

Troy Bayliss has gone fastest in the opening practice session for the Assen World Superbike round, reassured, no doubt, by the anouncement of a two-year extension of his contract with Ducati.

The 27-year-old Australian lapped in a time of 1:40.692, ahead of Alex Barros with 1:41.227 and Noriyuki Haga with 1:41.417, as the riders adapted to the revised layout of the Dutch circuit for the first time. Regis Laconi and Yukio Kagayama rounded out the top five.

James Toseland was eighth fastest at the home round of his Ten Kate Honda team with 1:41.704. Fellow Brit chris Walker was 16th on the PSG-1 Kawasaki with 1:42.672, while Craig Jones was in the 27th and last place with 1:46.381 on the Foggy Petronas bike, behind local rider Harry Van Beek.
